While all of us here at The Kindness Effect deeply believe in raising awareness and money for any illness or charity, something about the Ice Bucket Challenge has struck a chord with our code of ethics. While we acknowledge that the challenge started out with good intentions we feel as though it has become misguided. Many people aren’t actually donating to ALS or MND and not to mention the most obvious, the waste of water.
Did you know?
- 800 million people in the world don’t have access to clean water.
- Our toilet water in the Western world is cleaner than majority of the water people have access to in developing countries.
- 3.4 million people die each year from a water related disease
- An Australian taking a 5 minute shower uses more water than the average person in a developing country slum uses for an entire day.
Don’t those facts make you think? We are throwing away something that 800 million people would call a treasure.
So we have decided to start out own Ice Bucket Challenge with a twist.
We dare you, all our followers, to do the Ice Bucket Challenge; HOWEVER, the water you use MUST be second hand and/or recycled in some way.
Use your toilet water, water from your bath, water from the beach or a pond. Fill the sink with a plug while you brush your teeth and use that water. Even the ice, must be second hand. Get creative and as dirty as you want.
Now the important part is to NOT forget to donate.
We are donating to Water.org – a world-wide organisation that understands and believes that people in developing countries know best how to solve their own problems. They forge partnerships with organisations that understand and are part of the local culture. The result: a solution tailored to the needs of each community. They focus on providing clean and drinkable water, as well as sanitation and hygiene.
Jump on their website to make a donation: https://contribute.water.org/donate/
We will donate $25 (per team member) as well as complete the Ice Bucket Challenge, and we nominate YOU, and ask you to nominate 2 other people.
